Lips: NYX Butter Gloss in "Maple Blondie"

The product being reviewed in this post was purchased by me with my own money. The opinions stated further are my own opinions. I am not affiliated with the brand featured in this post.

*Phew.* So I read about changes in disclaimer policy recently and I thought I'd start putting disclaimers on my post, whether they are or aren't necessary since...well...I don't see myself receiving free products for review anytime soon (or anytime period, haha).

Anyway, when I first heard about the NYX Butter Gloss, a new lip gloss from NYX, I thought wow, that sounds delicious, haha. And when I stumbled upon it in Ulta, I couldn't resist. I purchased the shade "Maple Blondie."

These glosses are described as having "creamy sheer to medium coverage...without that sticky sensation" (as taken from the NYX website). How do they stand up to these claims, and how does this product perform overall? Keep reading to find out!

THE BASICS

Name: Maple Blondie (BLG11)
Net Wt.: 0.23 oz./6.5 g.
Price: ~$5
Finish: Creamy gloss

NYX's Butter Gloss comes in a typical circular tube. The tube is transparent - taking on the color of the gloss inside - and the cap is colored to match the gloss.

The gloss unfortunately comes as is - no seal, no extra packaging, just the tube (at least that's how it was at my Ulta). As such, there is a great deal of information on the tube itself, including a description of the product, ingredients, and NYX's cruelty-free logo. The bottom of the tube has a sticker with the product name and number.

LEFT: The product name and description - "Butter me up with divine gloss that feels like it melts on the lips."
RIGHT: The bottom of the tube with the product name and number.
The product ingredients.
The cruelty-free logo, product shelf-life, and recycling symbol.

The Butter Gloss comes with a traditionally shaped and sized doe-foot applicator.

This product has a delicious, sugary buttercream scent to it that fades after application (unfortunately! T_T).

COLOR/SWATCHES

"Maple Blondie" (BLG11) is a bright, creamy peachy-pink color. When swatched on the hand, it does indeed prove to have sheer to medium coverage, so that part of the claim is true for this color.

As you can see in the picture on the right, this product has a beautiful glossy (but not glassy) finish. The same is true when the color is applied to the lips, although the brightness of it seems to get toned down by my lips' pigmentation. (Pictures coming up shortly.)

WEAR (WITH LIP SWATCHES)

The color is a milky peachy-pink on my lips, and I ADORE it. It looks fresh and polished and instantly brightens my face.

The texture of the gloss is smooth during application, although I find that after initial application it feels somewhat thick and sticky when I rub my lips together. In fact, be careful when you pull the wand out of the tube - the gloss sticks well to the doe-foot applicator and the first time I pulled it out, some of the gloss flung onto my shirt. As the color settles, however, the tackiness of the gloss dissipates and my lips are left feeling smooth (although obviously coated in something - there is definitely substance to this gloss).

The area where this gloss performs weakest is how the color applies. The application reminds me of the L'Oreal Colour Caresse Shine Stains, where the milkiness/sheerness of the color makes it gather at the lip outline/corners. You can see this a bit in the following lip swatches. The best way to put it is that the pigmentation is a bit streaky and can look uneven if applied away from a mirror. Once the color settles, however, it does not seem to move around anymore.

Another negative is that the color seems to gather in my lip lines, although this is only noticeable up close so I don't mind it much.

Just applied - excuse the patch on the bottom-left portion of my lip. Not sure why there isn't any gloss there. O_o

Same as before, only at a different angle.

My lips feel a bit moisturized once this product wears off, which is after about three plus hours, depending on whether you are eating or talking a lot during that time (in which case it may be nothing more than a bit of shine at the approach of the third hour). Like most glosses I've tried, the color slowly fades as time goes by. The product's shine is the last thing to go.

After one hour of walking outside in icy weather. The intensity of the color is weakened but the color itself is still present.

Same as previous picture, but at a different angle.

The next two pictures were taken on a different day two hours after application, though I ate a small snack during those two hours.

In this case, my lips are almost bare, with the exception of the glossy finish.

OVERALL

Although application can be a bit tricky, I love the scent, texture, and (above all) color of NYX's Butter Gloss in "Maple Blondie." In fact, this product makes me want to do two things: (1) buy more colors and (2) find a lipstick in this color because it's GORGEOUS and I prefer lipstick over gloss on a daily basis. This product definitely lives up to its claims and I find myself reaching for it just to get that youthful, fresh look that the color gives.

I would recommend this product to those who love bakery-scented products, those who enjoy glosses with sheer but buildable pigmentation (though never completely opaque), and those who prefer thick but not sticky lip products. I would not recommend this product to those who are sensitive to scents, those who prefer fool-proof application, or those who prefer slicker textures.

I am really happy with my purchase, and can't wait to try the NYX products I purchased in my last haul! Thanks for stopping by. 'Til next time! ('<>')>

Have you tried any of NYX's Butter Glosses? And do you have any recommendations for a lipstick in a color similar to "Maple Blondie"?

    1. Hi Melanie! =] Thank you for the kind feedback! These glosses seem to be the most popular part of NYX's "Butter" line - they are definitely great quality for the price. I'm glad you enjoy them too!

It's a pity they didn't carry the scent into the rest of the line! I love sweet/foodie smelling cosmetics, lol. x]
